Thanks! When Doug saw the quilt, he said, “I have just one criticism…” “What? You don’t like the flowers?” I asked. But, that wasn’t it at all. I simplified the field shape a little bit by the bull pens and he pointed that out.

Definitely by machine. My lap doesn’t really have much room for a hoop these days! I really like the idea of radiating circles. Thanks for the suggestion!

How about radiating circles, like when you drop a pebble in water. Or, the traditional concentric arcs, used in a lot of Amish designs. Gwen Marsten and Joe Cunningham use this desigh often also. Will you be quilting by hand or machine?

I’m glad the feedback was helpful, Laura. I can also tell you that I thought the instructions were pretty good. It included not just the instructions on how to make the mug mats, but quilting designs and a discussion of what bobbin work is, when to use it, etc. I’ll certainly be posting the results of the future lessons too.

Reporting back. I did figure out how to do it. I was in the Sewing & Vacuum Center in Davis Square in Somerville, MA (http://www.singersewandvac.com/) buying a used Singer for one of my young students on behalf of her parents and realized that the store also sold Janomes. So, I asked. (Brilliant, huh?) On the back of the machine, just below where the presser foot is, there is a slider and you just push it one way to drop the feed dogs and then slide it back to raise them back up. I really need to find my book.
